The forty-four voice Thiel Choir from Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania, will present a concert at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening, March 6, 2014 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 116 N. 7th Street, Zanesville, OH. The performance is part of the Thiel Choir’s 2014 spring choir tour. The Thiel Choir performs annually for audiences predominantly in the eastern United States and tours internationally every four years. The ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Michael Bray, reflects the diverse interests and disciplines of the Thiel College student body. In his eighteenth year as Director of Choral Activities, Bray conducts the Thiel Choir and Chamber Singers, Thiel College Handbell Ringers, teaches private instruction in voice, music history and conducting. Bray completed his undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado, and earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he studied under Maurice Skones and Kenneth Jennings, both prominent Lutheran conductors.
Thiel College, a four-year, coeducational, liberal arts college located near the Pennsylvania-Ohio border approximately equidistant from Erie, Pittsburgh and Cleveland, enrolls 1100 students. Thiel College is a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and its 135-acre campus is located in College Heights in Greenville, a community of 7,000.
The choir, under the direction of Dr. Michael Bray, will perform a variety of sacred works Bach, Tavener, Gabriel Faure, Knut Nystedt, Kenneth Jennings, Paul Manz, Howard Helvey, Magnificat by Johann Pachelbel, The Wedding Cantata by Daniel Pinkham, arrangements of folk songs and hymns by Bob Chilcott, Paul Christiansen, F. Melius Christiansen and Robert Wetzler as well as arrangements of spirituals by Andre Thomas. There will be no charge for admission, however, a freewill offering will be taken.
